ZERO HUNGER CHALLENGE AND ROLE OF AN INDIVIDUAL TO ACHIEVE IT

By the end of 2030,the population of the world is expected to be around 8.3 billion but, globally 815 millions people everyday go to bed hungry .This redoubling poverty is concentrated in East Asia,South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.China has reduced the poverty to half and India by 36%.In Nepal, approximately 5 million people  are undernourished.Nearly 1 people out of 4 lives below poverty line in Nepal.Due to this alarming rate of food insufficiency and hunger in different parts of the world mostly South Asia the UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon in 2012 launched Zero Hunger Challenge to serve the world with quality, nutritious and sufficient food to produce healthy manpower by the end of 2050. Nepal government has also made commitment to take part in Zero Hunger Challenge launched by Ban ki Moon. Zero Hunger Challenge has 5 goals of Sustainable Development Goals which are ;1.All foods are sustainable from production to consumption.2.An end to rural poverty;double small-scale producer income and productivity 3.Adopt all food systems to eliminate loss or waste of food.4.Access adequate food and healthy diet for all people all year round.5.An end to malnutrition in all its forms.

Every action of an individual counts to achieve Zero Hunger Challenge which is launched by UN.Globally ,1.3 billion ton of food is wasted or lost every day. This waste food   in turns release 8% of total green house and if this foodstuffs are managed around 14% of green house gas emission from agriculture can be managed by 2050 and we can become more near to zero hunger.Every individual can manage food by not wasting food, taking only required food and giving food to others who are in starvation.

Water is vital and life doesn't exist in its absence.Every food we waste is water. To produce an apple around 75 litre is necessary and to produce a potato 25 litre water is necessary(FAO) and around 140 litre of water is necessary to produce a cup of coffee(FAO).Benjamin Franklin mentions "When the well is dry,we will know the worth of water".

Large amount of water is wasted from our houses, schools ,hospitals and public offices. The precious water loss can be controlled individually from their side by closing the taps and increasing water use efficiency. The wasted water can be further used for irrigation in field and forest using climate smart irrigation system, industry etc.

The large amount of plastic bags in the road are thrown. But,consequently they take around 500 years to decompose. Thus, their use can be minimized and if used can be recycled for creating clean and green environment. One must have the view "Limit the plastic".Scientists are now doing tests for plastics made up of carbonate and sugar which are bio-degradable and environmental friendly.

The utmost role can be done from agriculture sector.Healthy soil maintenance via organic farming system and minimal use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.Improved tillage practices  such as conservational and zero tillage can be applied as well as direct seeded rice technique because of which greenhouse gas emission can be minimized. Most of the farmers are unemployed because of drought mainly in Sub-Sarahan Africa which can be rectified by using climate smart irrigation system which stores rainwater and waste water for future use or in scarcity period.Similarly, farmers can be made aware and the ways to tackle with the climate change and changing their farming habit. For example .staple crops instead of sorghum and some other horticultural crops.Researches can be concentrated on launching technologies which use minimum resources and tackle with the existing burning planet. An individual has better indigenous knowledge about his community and available resources thus, they can exploit their localized resources in generating farmers reliable agricultural technology and having permaculture as a focal point.Similarly, agroforestry can be promoted because forests are the main sink for increasing today's atmospheric carbon dioxide and so does the healthy soil.

Every individual can save energy by concentrating on renewable resources

by turning light ,fan, heaters ,television off when not necessary and increasing investment in hydroelectricity  which generates power thus, helping in the processing and production of food items.Similarly, home gardening is also a way to achieve zero hunger although not sufficient. In many countries the school level students are taught about the home gardening and nutritious diets. Thus, they love nature and food.

Thus, every individual acts as an engineer for achieving the zero hunger challenge and it would be the greatest achievement ever known for coming generations too.

Thank you
